Can ChatGPT see your Shopify products?

How ChatGPT finds products and stores, what OpenAI says about Shopify, and the few things a store owner actually controls.

Probably, yes. But “seeing” your products and showing them to a shopper are different things, and only some of what decides the second part is in your hands. Here's what OpenAI has published, and what it means for a Shopify store.

Two ways ChatGPT finds your store

1. Its search crawler reads your pages

OpenAI says its crawler OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and that sites which block it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.” A separate agent, ChatGPT-User, visits pages when someone asks ChatGPT about them. Perplexity works similarly with PerplexityBot.

2. Product data from Shopify

For shopping results, OpenAI's help centre says the list of stores selling a product comes from merchant and product information supplied by third parties or by merchants directly. For Shopify stores specifically, it says product data comes through Shopify Catalog, and no extra work is needed from individual merchants.

What that means for you

If you're on Shopify, the product information ChatGPT gets is largely the information in your Shopify admin. So its quality matters: titles that say what the product is, descriptions with real detail, a barcode, a proper brand name, an accurate price and stock level. ChatGPT can only be as precise about your products as your own product data is.

OpenAI also lists what it looks at when ranking the stores that sell a product: availability, price, quality, and whether a store is the maker or main seller of that item. It says product results are chosen independently and aren't ads.

The three things you control

  1. Don't block the crawlers. Check your robots.txt doesn't disallow OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Some apps and security settings add these blocks without telling you.
  2. Keep your product data complete. Barcodes, brand, a clear title, a description of at least a paragraph, correct price and stock.
  3. Make your proof readable. Your review rating, shipping costs and return policy should be in your product pages' structured data, not just shown by an app, so any crawler can read them.

What nobody knows yet

No one outside OpenAI knows exactly how ChatGPT picks which products to show, and the same question can get different answers on different days. Shopping through AI assistants is still early. Anyone promising to get you “ranked in ChatGPT” is guessing. What you can do is make sure your store is readable and your product data is right, which also helps Google Shopping today.

A quick test you can run now

Ask ChatGPT a question a customer would ask, in your category and with “in Australia” on the end. See which stores come up, then run our inspection on one of your product pages to see what an AI crawler can read there.

Your next step

Run the free inspection on one of your product pages. It checks seven other things AI assistants and Google read, and tells you what to fix in plain English. If you'd rather not do it yourself, we can do it all with the Agent-Ready Setup ($595).
