Your Shopify Vendor field is your brand to Google
Many stores use Vendor for a supplier, collection or region. Google and AI assistants often read it as your brand. Here's how to check and fix it.

Shopify's Vendor field looks like an admin detail. Shopify says each product has one vendor, and if you don't set it, it defaults to your store name. Many themes then use that value as the product's brand in the data Google and AI assistants read. So whatever is in Vendor is, to them, your brand.
The mistake we see
Stores often use Vendor for something useful to them: the supplier, a collection name, a range, or the store name with a region tacked on. In inspections we've seen brand values like “Gift Sets” and “Brand | AU & NZ”. A shopper would never search for those, and they don't match the brand anyone else lists for the same product.
What Google asks for
Google Merchant Center's brand guidance says:
- Brand is required for products with a clearly associated brand or manufacturer.
- Use the brand name that people shopping online will generally recognise.
- If you make the product yourself and it has no separate brand, use your store name, and include an MPN (your own part or style number).
- Only provide a brand if you're sure it's correct.
How to fix it in Shopify
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products and sort or filter by vendor to see what values you're using.
- For each product, set Vendor to the plain brand name: the maker's brand for products you resell, or your own brand for products you make.
- If you were using Vendor to track suppliers or collections, move that to product tags or a metafield first, so you don't lose it.
- Use bulk editing to change many products at once, then spot-check a few product pages.
If changing Vendor would break something else in your store, a developer can set the brand in your product structured data separately. The snippet we install in the Agent-Ready Setup has a brand override for exactly this.
Why it matters for AI shopping
When a shopper asks an assistant about a brand, the assistant has to connect your listing to that brand. A clean brand value makes that possible. Our inspection flags brand values that look like a category, range or region. As always: this measures whether your data is clear, not whether an assistant will recommend you.
Your next step
Run the free inspection on one of your product pages. It checks seven other things AI assistants and Google read, and tells you what to fix in plain English. If you'd rather not do it yourself, we can do it all with the Agent-Ready Setup ($595).
